An image showing the Delhi government distributing masks to school children as part of their initiative is being shared with a false claim that the image is a recent one.
Amid the second wave of COVID-19 in the country, an image showing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia along with another man tying a face mask on a young kid's face is being widely shared on social media platform with a sarcastic message insinuating that the image is a recent one
Ex-Mayor of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Sandip Joshi tweeted the image with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to "Three experts without any mask teaching a kid how to wear a mask."
Following this, several users of Twitter and Facebook started sharing the image with the same caption.
In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The image showing Kejriwal and Sisodia tying a face mask on a young boy's face is not a recent one and dates back to 2019 when the Delhi government distributed N95 masks in schools urging people to wear masks to protect themselves from the pollution.
With the relevant keyword search, we found some pictures of the event shared in a Tweet by Aam Aadmi Party on November 1, 2019. The caption shared with the images reads, "Delhi has turned into a 'gas chamber' due to pollution caused by crop burning in neighboring states. This is why we are distributing 50lakh masks from today onwards in pvt. and govt. schools. I urge all Delhiites to use them whenever needed.”@ArvindKejriwal"
The same was tweeted by Delhi CM.
On performing a reverse image search, we found the viral image carried in a report by The Print dated November 1, 2019 with a caption, "Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal distributes masks in schools | PTI." The image has been credited to the news agency PTI.
As per the report, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal handed out masks to school children as a part of his govt's initiative.
In conclusion, an image showing the Delhi government distributing masks to schoolchildren as part of their initiative is being shared with a false claim that the image is a recent one.
