Fact Check: A Video Of A Brawl Between Men At Jaspur's Dargah Shared With A False Communal Angle

  • Share

A video of a brawl over a trivial matter in Uttarakhand’s Jaspur during a shrine visit on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat is being shared with a false communal angle.

A video clip is being widely shared on social media platforms showing a violent clash between a group of men claiming that incident is from Uttarakhand’s Jaspur when a bunch of Muslim men hit ‘Hindus’ who had visited a shrine.

The clip was first shared on Sudharshan News channel's Twitter page with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "The Khadim of Mazar beat up seculars who went to offer chadar at Jaspur Dargah in Uttarakhand. Many people saved their lives by hiding. Some time ago, the leftists created a fuss over the incident of the holy Dasna temple".

Several other social media users started sharing the video with the same caption in Hindi.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be misleading. The video is being shared with a false communal angle. The clash erupted over donations and construction, and both parties involved in it belonged to the same community.

On performing a relevant keyword search, we found ab ETV Bharat report published on 29 March according to which that a fight ensued between the caretaker of the Mazar situated in Jaspur’s Udham Singh Nagar and devotees. According to the report, some devotees had come to the shrine on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat and a dispute erupted over donation between the visitors and the caretakers of the shrine turned into a fight in which three people were reportedly injured. One of them also had to be hospitalized.

The report also has a video byte of a victim. The victim can be heard saying, "In the afternoon we went to the shrine, after offering namaz when we came out, the caretaker who sits outside started asking for a donation. I gave Rs 10 and said it is enough, on which he asked for donating Rs 50. This led to a scuffle, and he started thrashing me. He thrashed me so brutally that I lost my consciousness."

Udham Singh Nagar police also took to Facebook to dismiss the rumours being spread on social media. It stated that both the parties involved in the matter belonged to the same community. The message reads, "We want to alert you that two parties between whom the scuffle happened on March 29, 2021, in Kalu Siddh Mazar Patrampur Jaspur, Udham Singh Nagar are Amjad Ali, son of Mohammed Hasam, resident of Chhipian Police Station, Jaspur, Udham Singh Nagar and Abdul Hameed son Gursher resident Bhogpur, Dam police station, Jaspur. The brawl happened on the matter of donation and construction. After listening to both the angles, FIR has been filed against them. Some people are falsely claiming on social media that Hindus were beaten mercilessly in Dargah, while the truth is that both sides were people of the Muslim community. Misleading and false rumours are being spread on social media by some individuals regarding the incident that are being marked by social media monitoring cell and necessary action is being taken." (Translated from Hindi)

In conclusion, a video of a brawl over a trivial matter in Uttarakhand’s Jaspur during a shrine visit on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat is being shared with a false communal angle.
