Fact Check: Unrelated video falsely shared to show Wasim Rizvi being manhandled

  • Share

Summary

An unrelated video showing BJP MLA being manhandled by farmers on March 27 is being shared with a false claim that it shows former Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Waqf Board chairman Wasim Rizvi being beaten up for filing a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking removal of 26 verses from the Quran.

Recently, former Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Waqf Board chairman Wasim Rizvi filed a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking removal of 26 verses from the Quran claiming that it promotes terrorism. Following this, a video is being widely shared on social media platforms showing a man being thrashed in public while police try to rescue him with a claim that it shows Rizvi being beaten up by the public for his statement.

A Facebook user shared the video with a caption saying, "Look at Wasim Rizvi's situation."

This video has been reshared over 49,000 times.

The voiceover in the video in Kashmiri translates to, “Congratulations to all Muslim brothers. Sikh brothers are beating Wasim Rizvi who filed a case in Supreme Court insulting the Quran. He had to hide inside a shop for his life with the help of the police. This is what happens to people who show hate.”

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The video shows BJP MLA from Punjab Arun Narang being thrashed allegedly by a group of farmers on March 27.

On performing reverse image search, we found the viral visuals carried in an India Today report stating that “Protesting Farmers Thrash BJP MLA, Tear His Clothes In Punjab’s Muktsar."

As per the report, the incident took place on March 27 when BJP’s Abohar MLA Arun Narang went to Malout to address a press conference. He and other local BJP leaders were surrounded by a group of protesting farmers. Black ink was thrown at them and the protestors also allegedly thrashed the leaders and tore Narang’s clothes.

Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh also condemned the attack.

However, reportedly, a number of Muslim groups across the country have condemned the PIL, filed by Rizvi on March 11. On March 19, hundreds of protesters and clerics from both Shia and Sunni communities protested at Delhi’s Jama Masjid demanding his arrest. An FIR was also registered in Bareilly against Rizvi for hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims. But no credible news reports stating that Rizvi was manhandled either by Muslims or any other group were found.

In conclusion, an unrelated video showing BJP MLA being manhandled by farmers on March 27 is being shared with a false claim that it shows former Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Waqf Board chairman Wasim Rizvi being beaten up for filing a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking removal of 26 verses from the Quran.
