Fact Check: Old video from Amravati showing police lathi-charging shared as a recent amid current lockdown

  • Share

Summary

An old video from Amravati dating back to March 2020 showing police lathi-charging those who are not following lockdown is being falsely shared as a recent one amid increasing COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra.

A video is being shared on social media showing a man praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his initiatives with the claim that the man seen in the video is none other than Congress MLA 'Anil Upadhyay.'

A Facebook user shared the video with the caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Unknowingly, Congress MLA Anil Upadhyay said the right thing. Make this video go viral so that whole India can see it."

This video is being circulated on Twitter and Facebook with the same caption since last year.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false.  In the video, the man praising Modi is not a Congress MLA and his name is Mohan Chandra Pandey, not Anil Upadhyay. In fact, there is no Congress MLA with the name Anil Upadhyay.

At the beginning video, we noticed that the man in the suit is referred to as ‘Pandey ji’. Taking a hint from this and on performing relevant keyword search, we found similar videos of the same man in the search results.

Some users have tagged ‘@M0hanPandey’ while sharing his videos. On analyzing the Facebook and Twitter profiles of ‘Mohan Chandra Pandey’, it was confirmed that the man praising Modi in the video is Mohan Chandra Pandey. He has posted the same video on his profile in December 2019. In one of his other videos, he mentions that he works as a Zonal Sales Manager – Everest Masala.

In April 2019, Republic TV aired one of his videos stating that Congress leader Anil Upadhyay.. Pandey also put out a tweet clarifying that the channel has wrongly present him as Congress leader Anil Upadhyay and also stated that he is 'just a fan of PM Modi.'

Moreover, on checking 'My Neta' website we did not find any Congress MLA with the name ‘Anil Upadhyay’.

In conclusion, a video showing a man praIsing PM Modi is being widely shared with a false claim that the man in the video is Congress MLA Anil Upadhyay.
