An old-unrelated image showing MS Dhoni on the tractor is being shared with a misleading claim that the former Indian Cricket team captain has extended his support for a tractor rally that will be carried out by agitating farmers on Republic Day, i.e, January 26.
Many people believe that a farmer protestor who died at the farmer’s protest at the ITO was shot dead by the police. The belief that the police shot Navreet Singh dead is widespread because of netizens who popularized this claim and a viral clip that shows Rajdeep Sardesai claiming the same.
Many have been sharing the clip where Rajdeep Sardesai is being interviewed at the protest site and he reports that he saw the dead body of the deceased and goes on to say that he was shot in the head and suffered a bullet injury due to which he succumbed. This clip acts as the major propagator of the misleading claim that Navreet Singh succumbed after he was shot by the police when he was driving his tractor. This claim which was yet to be verified spread like wildfire, where-in Rajdeep Sardesai not only reported this unverified claim on live television but he also tweeted the same.
Rajdeep Sardesai tweeted "One person, 45 year old Navneet killed allegedly in police firing at ITO. Farmers tell me: the sacrifice will not go in vain..#groundzero".
However, it was reported that the autopsy report shows no bullet injury and the postmortem suggests that Singh succumbed due to injuries when his tractor got into an accident after it sped through barricades and overturned. Moreover, CCTV footage has also been shared which shows how Singh's tractor sped through the police barricades and overturned.
Following this confirmation, netizens expressed their outrage at Sardesai for propagating lies and misleading information about Singh’s death on mainstream platforms. Sooner #ArrestRajdeepNow was a trending hashtag in India where netizens and fellow journalists expressed their anger over Sardesai’s unprofessional actions which led to the spread of false news.
This outrage was followed by India Today suspending Sardesai for two weeks and cut his payment for a month.
