A post is getting viral on social media with a claim that 17 female doctors from JJM Medical College in Karnataka’s Davangere district who were on a trip to Goa died in a fatal bus mishap on Bengaluru Pune highway.
A Facebook user name Mir Imran share a picture with a claim that “RIP. 17 lady doctors all #gynecologist professors of JJMM College Davengere, Karnataka going from Davengere to Goa on picnic trip died on spot on Bengaluru Pune highway when their minibus crashed with a sand-laden tipper at DHARWAD at 7.30 am on Friday.”
In our investigation, we found that the viral claim is false. A group of 17 women all of whom had studied at St Paul’s Convent in Davangere was traveling to Goa for a trip when their vehicle collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction on Friday, January 15.
After doing reverse image research on Google we found the same picture was carried by a news report The Indian Express. According to the report, At least 13 people were killed and eight were injured after a minibus collided head-on with a truck on the Hubballi-Dharwad bypass road in north Karnataka on Friday morning. According to police, a group of 17 women all of whom had studied at St Paul’s Convent in Davangere was traveling to Goa for a trip in the minibus.
According to the report of The Times of India Dr. Veena Prakash, who worked as a well-known gynecologist at Davangere city was the only doctor in the group.
On January 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident and wished for a speedy recovery of the injured persons.
In conclusion, the viral claim is false that 17 female doctors from JJM Medical College died in a road accident in Karnataka is misleading. We found that the women were former classmates at St Paul’s Convent School in Davanagere. Nine among them died in the accident, and there was only one doctor among the deceased.
