Summary

A morphed image showing Union Home Minister Amit Shah greeting AIMIM chief Asauddin Owaisi is doing rounds on social media platforms.

An image has surfaced on social media platforms showing Union Home Minister Amit Shah greeting All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM)  chief, Asauddin Owaisi terming it as a secret pact between Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and AIMIM ahead of West Bengal Assembly Poll 2021.

Facebook user shared the viral with a caption Bengali that can be roughly translated, "Amit Shah pleaded by holding Asaduddin's hands and said 'like Bihar give us Bengal too, I will offer the cash whatever it requires."

Several other Facebook users are also sharing this mage with a similar claim.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The viral image is morphed and is doing rounds on social media for many years. The real image shows Amit Shah greeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In 2017, the same image was tweeted by Digvijaya Singh, senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. He said in his tweet, "Someone sent me this picture wears a saffron waistcoat. But nowadays you never know!"

With the help of reverse image search, we found the original image published by Daily Mail on October 20, 2014, shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi being facilitated by BJP President, Amit Shah in New Delhi. At the time, the party had won assembly elections of two states, Haryana and Maharashtra.

In the viral image, Prime Minister's head has been replaced and photoshopped to Owaisi's while the dress remains the same.

Hindi news channel ABP News reported about the image been mischievously edited in 2017 as pointed out by Congress leader Digvijaya Singh.

In conclusion, a morphed image showing Union Home Minister Amit Shah greeting AIMIM chief Asauddin Owaisi is doing rounds on social media platforms.
