A horrific incident came to light from Badaun, Uttar Pradesh where a 50-year-old woman was murdered and gang-raped by allegedly by a priest and his two aides on January 3, 2020. Amid this, an image has surfaced on social media showing a girl's body surrounded by her family members claiming that it is from the incident in Badaun. 

A Twitter user shared the image with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Badayun Gang-rape murder case, a 50-year-old woman who had gone to a temple was gang-raped and murdered. The brutality committed during the gang-rape would put a monster to shame. But the priest and his disciples were worst than a monster. Badaun police did not act on the case for two days. This is the limits of brutality."

The image is also doing rounds on Facebook with a similar claim. 

The truth behind the claim 

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false.  The viral image shows the dead body of a young woman who was brutally murdered in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh in 2018. 

With the help of a reverse image search, we found it published on the website Bolta Hindustan on December 25, 2018, according to which a 20-year-old girl from Unnao, UP, was found murdered in a farm on December 24.

On further investigating, we found a tweet carrying a tweet the viral image, to which Unnao district police responded saying that Maurava police took immediate action soon after they got the information about this murder. 

We also found an article about the incident published on the ‘Gaon Connection’ website.  ‘24 Surya News’ also uploaded a video reporting the incident on their YouTube channel.

In conclusion, an old image from 2018 showing the dead body of a young woman who was brutally murdered in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh is being falsely linked to the recent incident in UP's Badaun where a 50-year-old woman was gang-raped and murdered on January 3.
