The image is not from an anti-CAA protest but from a pride march in Kolkata.
An image is going viral which shows a woman with a few other people on the road at what seems like an event, taking pictures. This picture has adhered with the claim that they are JNU students protesting against Hindu women wearing sindur and sarees.
The image went viral after several users on Twitter and Facebook have shared it with similar claims that the people in the picture are JNU students protesting against Hindu cultures such as sindur and sarees. Some of the users have also added claims that this image was taken during the time of the Anti-CAA protests and have referred to leftists as mentally distorted.
In order to verify this, we did a reverse image search and found several other social media posts claiming different things and giving their own context to this particular image. However, we found one Bengali news article from a website called Khas Khobor whose headline reads, “'Muktapanthi' Bengali leader mocks the nude picture of a leftist woman”.
The article talks about how Panchali Kar ( the person in the image) has been having criticisms drawn to her for her leftist movement participation, the way she dresses, and her posts. We used keywords and social media searches to find out the original picture which was posted by Kar itself on January 2019.
The caption of the image says “Pride 2019” and the location tagged is Baghbazar Street which is in Kolkata.
Therefore, the image is not from an anti-CAA protest but from a pride march in Kolkata which she took part in. Moreover, in her interview with India Today, she confirmed that the image and the event had nothing to do with JNU. However, she added that "At the 2019 Pride walk, we did raise slogans against NRC and CAA, because, why not? This was and still is a major crisis. But claiming that this picture is from an anti-CAA rally is hilarious,".
