Fact Check: Fake National Geographic magazine cover related farmers’ protest shared as a real one

  • Share

The supposed National Geographic magazine which has gone viral on social media is actually an artwork of an Instagram user. The magazine has till now not featured the ongoing farmers' protest on the cover of any of its editions.

Recently, an image has surfaced on social media platforms claiming that it shows the National Geographic magazine's winter cover for 2020 which is related to recent farmers’ protests in India.

A Facebook user shared the image with the caption saying, "Largest protest in the world."

Several Twitter users are also sharing the image thanking National Geographic for the gesture.

"National Geographic" is written on the supposed magazine cover, along with a picture of a man wearing a turban.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The viral image is actually an imaginary artwork by an Instagram user. The National Geographic has not featured the farmers' agitation as a cover story in any of its editions till now.

We checked the latest issues of the National Geographic magazine, and could not find any cover image related to recent Indian farmers’ protest.

On closely looking at the viral image, we found "@anoopreet" written at the right-hand bottom corner of the image. Searching through social media, we found the user's Instagram account.

We searched for the profile and found the viral image posted by the user – ‘anoopreet’ on Instagram, with a clear description that this is her artistic creation based on a photograph clicked by photojournalist Ravi Choudhary of PTI. Also, the same farmer photo can be found on the profile of ‘choudharyravi’. ‘The Quint’ has also published the photo, in December 2020, giving credits to ‘PTI/Ravi Choudhary’.

In conclusion, the supposed National Geographic magazine which has gone viral on social media is actually an artwork of an Instagram user. The magazine has till now not featured the protest on the cover of any of its editions.
