Fact Check: 4-year-old photo of Asaduddin Owaisi and Smriti Irani revived in the backdrop of GHMC Polls

  • Share

Summary

An old image from August 2016 when Owaisi met Irani during Powerloom Industry Stakeholders Meeting 2016 has been revived on social media platforms in the wake of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Election that took place on December 1.

Amid the ongoing farmers' protest in the country, an image is being widely circulated on social media platforms showing two men standing on the Indian national flag while another man in a turban is seen holding his shoe over the flag, which is laid on the street with the claim that protesting farmers have disrespected the Tricolour.

A Twitter user named Rashmi shared this image with the caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Does India take pride in such farmers. It seems as if foreign terrorists have entered the country in the disguise of farmers. Such insult to the flag of their own country, an insult to our national flag, is this farmers' protest?”

The is also viral on Facebook with a similar claim.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The viral is not related to the ongoing farmers' protest in the country against the centre's newly passed farm bills. The viral image is more than 7 years old and is not from India but from London, showing a protest by Khalistani supporters on India’s Independence Day in 2013.

With the help of reverse image search, we found the viral picture in a blog named “Dal Khalsa UK”. The blog which was was published on August 17, 2013, also carried similar pictures of people disrespecting the Tricolour. As per the blog, the pictures were clicked on August 15, 2013, during a protest by “Sikhs, Kashmiris & other minority groups” near the Indian High Commission in central London. The protest was against “Indian Oppression” on Sikhs and “Occupation” of Punjab, the blog said. A timestamp of 15/08/2013 can also be seen in the picture.

The partially cropped logo of “Dal Khalsa UK” can also be seen in the viral picture, which is a radical Sikh organisation.

Several videos on YouTube channel of “Dal Khalsa UK” show people from the Sikh community and others protesting against India on her Independence Day in London.

In conclusion, an unrelated picture of some people disrespecting the Indian national flag is being falsely linked to the ongoing farmers’ protest. The picture is more than seven years old and of some Khalistani supporters in London.
