Fact Check: Was this elderly protester at 'Delhi Chalo' march hit by security personnel or not?

  • Share

Summary

The image tweeted by senior Congress leaders showing security personnel hitting an elderly protester was misleading as it simply shows the security personnel swinging the baton in the air to scare the protester away. However, a short clip that is doing rounds to show that the man seen in the viral image escaped unhurt is also misleading as it is a cropped video that does not show the complete truth. We found a longer version of the video showing the aged protester targetted by two security personnel and he was hit on his left leg by one of them.

Recently, Indian National Congres shared an image showing a young child covered in dust, holding a vessel with rocks with another child partially visible in the background targetting ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its handling of the COVID-19 situation and the impact it has had on the economy, especially children.

INC shared the image with a caption Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "The Corona crisis and the BJP crisis has had an impact on the economy of the country and also its people. Corona has caused seven crore children to face poverty. Modi government should take quick steps to remove the country from poverty."

The same photo was shared by several other users on Facebook including verified state wing pages of Congress.

However, in our investigation we found that image shared by INC to purportedly show child labour in India is actually from Bangladesh and is more than a decade old.

With the help of reverse image search on Google, we found this image shared on photo agency Panos pictures's website. According to the caption, the image was captured by photojournalist G.M.B. Akash in January 2008, in Bangladesh and it shows children working at a brick factory in Fatullah, Bangladesh.

The caption of the photo states, "Children at a brick factory in Fatullah. For each thousand bricks they carry, they earn the equivalent of 0.9 USD. 17.5 percent of all children aged between 5-15 are engaged in economic activities. The average child labourer earns between 400 to 700 taka (1 USD = 70 taka) per month, while an adult worker earns up to 5,000 taka per month." One can see the same child in this photo as in the viral photo.

In conclusion, INC passed off a decade-old image from Bangladesh showing 'child labour' as an image from India to target BJP over the economic crisis.
