Fact Check: Fake screengrab falsely claim that Sambit Patra's daughter eloped with a Muslim man

Summary

A fake screengrab of ABP news is being widely shared to falsely claim that Sambit Patra's daughter eloped with a Muslim man.

In the backdrop of farmers' protest against the Centre’s new farm acts, an image is being widely shared on social media platforms, an image is being widely shared by social media users showing thousands of people sitting on a road claiming that the image is from the ongoing protest in Delhi. 

A Facebook user shared the image with a caption saying 'Today's historic picture' along with the hashtags in support of the farmers. 

This post received over 340 reshared.

Some other users are sharing the image claiming that the image is from the Singhu Border Delhi. On November 30, farmers protesting against the Centre’s recent farm laws blocked the Tikri and Singhu borders.

On further checking, we found that this image is being widely shared on Facebook in relation to the farmers' protest.

The truth behind the claim 

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The image dates back to March 2018 and is not related to the ongoing farmers' protest in Delhi. 

With the help of a reverse image search on Google, we found this image shared by a Twitter handle named Mumbai Live on March 10, 2018, with the caption, "About 25,000 farmers have been marching to towards #Mumbai to protest against the anti-farmer policies. They have gathered at the Eastern Expressway Highway, opposite Viviana mall in #Thane."

We found an India Today report published on March 10, 2018, according to which over 30,000 farmers protested against the Maharashtra government demanding a complete waiver of loans and electricity bills and the implementation of recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission.

In conclusion, the viral image showing thousands of people sitting on the road is not related to the ongoing farmers' protest in Delhi. The image dates back to March 2018 showing farmers gathered at Eastern Expressway Highway in Mumbai.
