Fact Check: No, Volkswagen did not create this Terrorist Commercial

  • Share

Summary

A 15-year-old video spoof video is being shared with a false that Volkswagen created an advertisement about "terrorists".

The tropical storm, Cyclone Nivar has caused considerable damage to crops and fields, besides leaving many areas inundated in Chennai, parts of Tamil Nadu, and coastal towns in Puducherry. Amid this, a 13-seconds video clip is going viral on social media platforms in which one can see a tornado suddenly appear at the sea coast claiming that it shows the 'Cyclone Nivar.'

A Twitter user shared the video with the caption saying, "Human life is gonna end soon. One after another, bad things happening to humans. Advance RIP humans #ChennaiRains"

Several other Twitter and Facebook users are sharing the video with the same caption.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found that the viral clip is not from Tamil Nadu showing the arrival of Cyclone Nivar but, it is a Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) simulation clip of a tornado dating back to 2018 uploaded by a YouTuber.

With the help of reverse image search using the keyframes of the video, we found the viral clip as old as it has shared by multiple users in May 2020, hence, not related to Cyclone Nivar.

A similar video was uploaded on YouTube with the title – ‘Tornado CGI simulation (Cinema 4D TurbulenceFD)’, by ‘Alexandru Dineci’  December 2018. The same visuals can be seen in this original video as in the viral clip from the 10 seconds timestamp.

The YouTuber has also posted a breakdown of how the simulation was created which can be seen in the below video.

In conclusion, an unrelated video of a Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) simulation clip of a tornado is being falsely shared as a video of cyclone Nivar.
