A 15-year-old video spoof video is being shared with a false that Volkswagen created an advertisement about "terrorists".

A video showing a man attempting a suicide bombing is going viral on social media platforms with a claim that it is an ad commercial about "terrorists" by Volkswagen. In the video one can see a man getting into a Volkswagen car and driving around the city, he later stops in front of a restaurant, and press a remote, which instead of causing a huge blast causes an explosion inside the car, eventually killing him. The slogan, "Polo: small but tough" suggesting the man was attempting a suicide bombing mission but failed and only killed him instead.

BJP leader Tajinder Singh Bagga shared this video with the caption saying, "Terrorist Commercial Ad by Volkswagen" Interesting?

Following this, many social media users started sharing this video with the same claim.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The video is at least 15-year-old, and a spoof.

With the help of relevant keyword searches on Google, we found several news articles about contentious video dating back to 2005, when the video first appeared on various websites.

According to the Guardian, a UK based news outlet dating back to Jan 20, 2005, the video is a spoof created by a "maverick advertising wannabe". The article also quoted a Volkswagen statement denying the company's involvement in the creation of the video saying, "Volkswagen UK and its agencies strenuously deny that they have any involvement in the creation of a viral advertisement that has been accessible through the internet depicting an explosion taking place inside a Volkswagen Polo."

According to, the company threatened to sue Lee & Dan, the team that made these videos. Since 2005, this alleged advertisement became viral. The 'Lee & Dan' team also apologized for this video.

In conclusion, a 15-year-old video spoof video is being shared with a false that Volkswagen created an advertisement about "terrorists".
