Summary

An old-unrelated video from 2018 showing the funeral procession of Yusup Temirkhanov, a man found guilty of murdering a former colonel in Russia is being shared to falsely show the mass Islamic funeral procession of the teenager who beheaded French teacher Samuel Paty in Paris.

Recently, a video showing a mass Islamic funeral procession being shared with the claim that these are scenes from the last rites of the Chechen teenager who beheaded French teacher Samuel Paty in Paris for showing cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in class on October 16.

A user named Afra Nazeem shared the video with the caption, "The Chechen youth who shot and killed Samuel, the teacher who insulted the Prophet Muhammad in France, was shot dead by the police there! His body was brought to Chechnya and buried."

Many Facebook users are also sharing the video with a caption in Urdu that can be roughly translated to, "Ghazi's body was brought to Chechnya and his reception as a national hero there. In France, the body of the Ghazi of Chechnya who brought the school teacher to hell was brought to Chechnya and was welcomed as a national hero there. Share the video as much as you can."

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The video dates back to 2018 and shows the funeral of Yusup Temirkhanov, the man accused of killing a former colonel of the Russian army, Yuri Budanov.

With the help of a reverse image search using keyframes of the video, we found a report published on a news website, Caucasian Knot, on 5 August 2018.

According to the report, Yusup Temirkhanov, who was serving a sentence in the Omsk colony for the murder of Yuri Budanov passed away in the hospital of natural causes. Tens of thousands of people gathered in the village of Geldagan, to take part in the funeral.

With the help of relevant keyword searches,  we found the same video uploaded by Russian magazine Spectrum on Facebook, which shows the visuals similar to the viral video.

Below is the comparison between visuals from the viral video and visuals from Spectrum Magazine's video.

According to a report by Russian news agency RIA, the funeral was also attended by Chechan state head, Ramzan Kadyrov. Kadyrov stated that there was “strong evidence” that the deceased was not involved in the death of a Russian serviceman and he would have the “unfair sentence” reviewed.

Samuel Paty was beheaded in Paris by 18-year-old Abdullakh Anzorov of Chechen origin for showing cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in a class. Soon after, Anzorov was shot dead by police. However, we could not find any report on his body being taken back to his native Chechnya and buried.

In conclusion, an old-unrelated video from 2018 showing the funeral procession of Yusup Temirkhanov, a man found guilty of murdering a former colonel in Russia is being shared to falsely show the mass Islamic funeral procession of the teenager who beheaded French teacher Samuel Paty in Paris.
