Fact Check: Unrelated video of a youth being assaulted falsely shared with a caste angle

  • Share

Summary

A video of a youth assaulted and fed water from a shoe over a love affair is being falsely shared on social media platforms with a caste angle.

On October 16, it was reported that West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh has tested positive for coronavirus following which he was admitted to a private hospital. Two days after, on October 18, Ghosh thanked people in a tweet for sending recovery wishes.

Amid this, an image of Ghosh surfaced on social media platforms in which he can be seen on a hospital bed with the claim that BJP leaders did not wear masks while visiting him.

The image was shared on a Facebook page named The Positive Indian with the caption "Meeting #COVID Positive Dilip Ghosh without wearing any Mask. Only BJP Leaders can Show Such Courage."

At the time of writing this article, this post has been reshared over 127 times.

The same image was also shared by a Twitter user with the same caption.

Few Bengali news outlets including Deshbidesh, Zee Bangla, and Bangla News live also used the same image in their article on Ghosh contracting coronavirus.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found that the viral image of bed-ridded Dilip Ghosh is not a recent image, but from 2018.

With the help of reverse image search, we found an article published by Bengali news outlet Kolkota 24×7 in January 2018 which carried the same viral image.

According to The Indian Express, Ghosh was admitted to a private hospital with complaints of severe back pain. “His primary diagnosis showed he is suffering from the prolapsed intervertebral disc, a press release issued by the hospital said.”

He was admitted to AMRI Hospital in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area on January 22, 2018.

Hence, an old image from 2018 of West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh is being falsely shared stating that BJP members visited him without wearing masks.
