All you need to know about Hathras gang rape case and misinformation around it

  • Share

Summary

It will be premature to declare that the victim was 'not gang-raped'. The victim's tongue was not chopped off but there was a cut mark on her tongue.

Also, it is not correct to rule out rape based on conflicting statements of mother and brother.

A video is getting viral on social media in which a mob of people can be seen beating up a man as police try to rescue him from the crowd. The video is being shared with the claim that the man being assaulted is BJP MP and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan. You can watch the video here:

A Facebook user name Kamaldeep Singh Saini shared the video with a caption, "Take it, brothers, the work has started. The landlord serving shoes to BJP MP Harsh Vardhan."( Translated from Punjabi ).

The viral video received 4,000 likes, and 14,000 shares at the time of writing this article.

Fact Check

In our investigation, we found that the viral video is misleading. This is an old video of an attack on a local BJP leader from West Bengal.

After doing a reverse image search of keyframes on Google, we found a video published on Youtube by the official page of ‘ABP News’ on ‘19 October 2016’.  The description of the video reads, "TMC supporters attack Babul Supriyo in Asansol, West Bengal"

We also found a news report of NDTV published on October 20, 2016. The report had carried the viral video. According to the report Union minister, Babul Supriyo was hit on the chest with a large stone in West Bengal's Asansol, thrown, allegedly by supporters of Trinamool leader and law minister Moloy Ghatak. Mr. Supriyo, who is the BJP parliamentarian from Asansol, went to the BNR More area where he was hit after a senior local party leader Subrata Mishra was beaten up allegedly by Trinamool workers as members of the two parties clashed.

On October 19, 2016, ANI tweeted photos from the incident showing Subrata Mishra being heckled. The tweet reads, "West Bengal: Ruckus during Union Minister Babul Supriyo’s visit in Asansol".

Back In November 2016, Harsh Vardhan tweeted and clarified that "A video in my name is making rounds on WhatsApp and other media. It's misleading content being spread with malicious and mischievous intent".

In conclusion, an old video showing BJP Leader from West Bengal, Subrata Mishra getting hackled by TMC supporters is being falsely shared as a recent attack on Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
