Fact Check: Old video and photos from old farmers' protests shared as recent

  • Share

Summary

All the photos and videos shared in the post are of old incidents of farmers protest at different places in the country. These photos and videos have nothing to do with the ongoing farmer’s protests against the agriculture bills passed by the Government of India.

A form of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' scheme is doing the rounds on social media in which it is being claimed that Rs 2 lakh will be given to all daughters under this scheme.

The ‘guidelines’ printed on the application state that "Under Prime Minister Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme girls and women aged between 8 and 22 years are eligible for financial assistance. And Rs 2 Lakh will be given to all daughters under this scheme. Address for sending the form, Government of India, Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Child Development, Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi 110001."

Fact Check

This news, however, is fake and misleading.

A Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact check has debunked the report and said, the distribution of any such form is illegal and no cash incentive is given under this scheme.

The tweet reads, "Claim:  In a form being distributed in the name of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, it is being claimed that Rs 2 lakh will be given to all daughters. : #PIBFactCheck: This form is fake. Distribution of any such form is illegal and no cash incentive is given under this scheme.

We also checked the official website of the Ministry of women & child development and found that they have issued a warning on their website against spurious schemes being floated in the name of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. "It has come to the notice of the ministry of women and child development, Government of India that certain unauthorized sites/organisations/NGOs/ individuals are distributing form in the name of cash initiative under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme. The scheme has no provision for individual cash transfer components by the government of India."

However, similar news was also going viral in 2017. According to a report published on October 16, 2017, titled "Women Fill Fake Forms To Get Rs 2 Lakh Under Beti Bachao Scheme", Minister of State for Women and Child Development Krishna Raj raised this issue in the Rajya Sabha and called for a CBI probe into the case. The issue was raised after similar fake forms were found doing the rounds in many states.

In Conclusion, the viral claim is false that Rs.2 lakh will be given to all daughters under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme. We found that the scheme does not offer any cash benefits and the message is fake.
