FACT CHECK: MP Congress shares morphed video falsely showing that people of Mandsaur named Kamal Nath as their CM

  • Share

Madhya Pradesh Congress shared a morphed video claiming falsely that the people of Mandsaur have rejected Shivraj Singh Chauhan and named Kamal Nath as their chief minister.

Ahead of by-elections for 27 seats in Madhya Pradesh, BJP, and Congress leaders including Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Kamal Nath have started campaigning.

In the backdrop of this, a video of Shivraj Singh Chauhan's visit to Mandsaur on September 20 was shared by the official Twitter page of Madhya Pradesh Congress claiming that the people of Mandsaur have rejected Shivraj Singh Chauhan and named Kamal Nath as their chief minister.

MP Congress shared the video with the caption, " Results of Madhya Pradesh by-election declared: Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, who reached Suwasra in Mandsaur, asked the public whether Shivraj Chauhan as Chief Minister was good or Kamal Nath, the people said in one voice, Kamal Nath. With whom the public stands, His name is Kamal Nath." (Translated from Hindi)

At the time of writing this article, this video has been shared over 2200 times.

In the video, Shivraj is seen asking the public who is good as the Chief Minister - Shivraj or Kamal Nath, to which the public responds by taking the name of Kamal Nath in one voice.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh also shared the same video with the same caption.

The video is being widely circulated on Facebook with the same claim.

However, we found that the video shared by Congress MP is morphed. The part where people are heard taking the name of 'Kamal Nath', has been separately added.

We found the full video of Shivraj Singh Chauhan's visit to Mandsaur on Shivraj's YouTube channel. The meeting was held at Suwasra where Hardeep Singh Dang, who left the Congress a few months ago, is the possible candidate from the BJP in the by-election. Hardeep was made a minister in the Shivraj government.

In the original video, Shivraj is heard asking the public, "Tell me another question, is Kamal Nath good or Shivraj Singh Chauhan is good as the Chief Minister". It is not clear whose name is being taken by the public in response but it is clear that people are not just taking the name of Kamal Nath, as can be heard in the viral video. The relevant part can be heard at 59.09 minutes in the following video.

MP BJP also took to Twitter and called out MP Congress for sharing the morphed video. In response to the viral video, MP BJP wrote, "So IPL is not the only one using fake crowd noise." In another tweet,  MP BJP added, "Just for your reference @INCMP, We know you are shameless enough not to delete the tweet & apologize. Like you never apologized to the farmers, the youth, the women, the elderly, or to Mahatma Gandhi for defying his last wish."

In conclusion, Madhya Pradesh Congress shared a morphed video claiming falsely that the people of Mandsaur have rejected Shivraj Singh Chauhan and named Kamal Nath as their chief minister.
