Amid the soaring tensions at the Line of Actual Control, a video is going viral on social media platforms with a claim that it shows Indian army men celebrating after the country trespassed into Chinese territory.
The video was shared on the Facebook page with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Big News: India has entered 4 kms into China. Indian army jawans celebrating."
At the time of writing this article, this post has been reshared over 2400 times.
A Twitter user named Deepika shared the viral video with the same claim.
In our investigation, we found this claim to be false.
With the help of a reverse image search using the keyframes of the video, we found the same clip uploaded by the Facebook page ‘ Tibet Channel’ on August 27. The accompanying caption stated, “Tibetan Army dance.”
A closer look at the video shows that the flag seen in the video are Tibetan flags.
A comparison of the frames of both the videos reveals that both the videos were recorded at the same time.
According to The Indian Express, “While there have been reports about SFF being involved in the August 29-31 operation to occupy previously unoccupied heights in Chushul sector in eastern Ladakh, the Army has so far maintained an official silence.” The SFF or the Special Frontier Force is a covert Indian unit comprising mostly of Tibetans in India.
On September 8, China accused India of illegally crossing the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh and firing warning shots at Chinese border personnel. The Indian army has dismissed the allegations. “At no stage has the Indian Army transgressed across the LAC or resorted to use of any aggressive means, including firing,” read a press release by Ministry of External Affairs.
It should be noted that the viral video predates both the August 29-30 clashes and the skirmish on September 7.
In conclusion, amid escalating tension between India and China, a video is being shared with a false claim that Indian Army men are celebrating after the country trespassed into Chinese territory. The video shows the SFF soldiers.
