Fact Check: A video of Tibetan Army celebrating is being falsely shared as Indian Army men celebrating

  • Share

Summary

Amid escalating tension between India and China, a video is being shared with a false claim that Indian Army men are celebrating after the country trespassed into Chinese territory. The video shows the SFF soldiers.

Amid the escalating tension between India and China at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a video emerged on social media purportedly showing some Chinese tourists enjoying on a boat in Pangong Tso lake.

Soon the video was picked up by a section of social media users who started circulating this video targetting BJP and insinuating that if Chinese tourists are seen in Pangong Tso lake, it is under Chinese control.

Sharing the video, Congress leader Salman Nizami targetted PM Modi and claimed that Chinese tourists were there in the Pangong Tso lake. He wrote, "Chinese tourists in Ladakh's Pangong Lake. Can someone ask '56 inch' Chowkidar if Indians now need a visa to visit Pangong Lake?"

The post received over 1600 retweets.

Congress National Coordinator Gaurav Pandhi shared the video of the Chinese tourists comparing it with a snippet from the movie Three Idiots, insinuating that back in 2009 the lake was part of Indian territory and now it is part of China. He wrote, "Chinese tourists enjoying at Pangong Tso. China has also opened it for foreign tourists. Meanwhile, do they know what has hit them? We have BANNED TikTok & PUBG Instead of humiliating China, BJP Govt is humiliating our armed forces with an absolute show of weakness."

A number of other users are sharing the video with a similar claim.

The truth behind the claim

It should be noted that Pangong Tso lake lies partially in India and partially in Tibet which is occupied by China. Around 60 percent of the length of the lake lies in Tibet. The lake is approximately 83 miles long. Though the exact demarcation of the end of Indian territory and beginning of the Chinese territory has been contested, only the western part of the lake comes under Indian territory.

Meanwhile, China has released a video of the lake on the Chinese side. This was also tweeted by a journalist of the state-controlled broadcaster CGTN. CGTN wrote, "Actually, #PangongTso in #China is open to tourists at home and abroad for quite a long time. The lake is near the Chinese national highway, a good place for self-driving travel. We have a resort on the lake there."

Hence, the video of the Chinese tourists vacationing in the lake is part of the lake that lies in China.
