An audio clip taken from Sardar Vallabhai Patel's speech on January 3, 1948 viral on social media

The viral one-minute audio clip is indeed taken from Sardar Vallabhai Patel's address on January 3, 1948.

Recently, an audio clip went viral on social media platforms with a claim that the statements were made by the first home minister of the country, Sardar Vallabhai Patel in a speech in 1948. You can watch the clip here:

The video was originally shared by a Twitter user named Chakshu with a statement attributed to Patel as the caption. The tweet reads, "The Muslims who are staying in Hindustan, most of them have helped in the creation of Pakistan. Now I do not understand how everyone's heart changed in one day, one night." - Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel

In the clip, one could hear Patel saying, "The Muslims who are still in India, many of them helped in the creation of Pakistan. Fine, if they did but then how come in one night, their hearts changed? I do not understand that. They say why their loyalty is being questioned. That is not something for us to answer." (Translated from Hindi)

The same video was shared by a Facebook page named Jammu Hindus Against Rohingyas with the same caption as the original tweet.

Amit Malviya retweeted the original tweet saying, "In 1946, the Muslim League won 429 seats out of 492 reserved for Muslims, in the elections of the province. 89.5% of Muslims voted for the League. Jinnah was demanding a separate country for Muslims. Only 4% of the Muslims voted for the Congress while Abul Kalam was the President of the Congress at that time."

However, some social media users expressed doubt over this purported clip of Sardar Patel. We also received a request to check the veracity of the claim.

Fact Check

In our investigation, we found that this audio clip is indeed a small part of Sardar Vallabhai Patel's address at the Calcutta Maidan on January 3, 1948. In this speech, Patel talks about the inside story of Kashmir, Junagadh, and India-Pakistan partition. You can find the complete 10-minutes speech here. The relevant portion can be heard at 5:40 minutes onward.

In the later part of the speech, Patel added, "We just say that alright you created Pakistan, good for you, we will not interfere. If things go bad then do not call us. Then they say Pakistan and India should become one, I plead them to not say that. That will be a loss for us, let them stay there. Let them create Pakistan."

Patel further adds, "But the Pakistan authorities say that their enemies are conspiring to destroy Pakistan. I would say to them that the enemies of Pakistan are not outside Pakistan but inside. We generously treated Pakistan in the matter of the division of assets, but at the same time, we could not obviously tolerate even a pie to be used for making bullets to shoot at us. The settlement is like a consent decree. The decree will be executed when the outstanding points are satisfactorily settled. This they represent as repudiation. If we wish to repudiate it, why should we have come to any settlement at all?

I would, therefore, earnestly plead that Pakistan authorities should reflect on the course which they have adopted. I can assure them that we have nothing but their good at heart and we want nothing more than to be left in peace. Let them, therefore, .create conditions in which both the Governments can settle down to their responsibilities and to the tasks of amelioration which demand urgent attention. " (Translated from Hindi)

In conclusion, the viral one-minute audio clip is indeed taken from Sardar Vallabhai Patel's address on January 3, 1948.
