Fact Check: Truth behind the viral video showing Pakistani men uprooting trees

  • Share

Summary

The video showing Muslims uprooting saplings in Pakistan is being shared with a false claim that men uprooted saplings as planting trees is against Islam.

Recently, a video from Pakistan showing a group uprooting plant saplings and waving black flags is being widely shared on social media claiming that the saplings were being uprooted as planting trees is against Islam.

Pakistani-Canadian author Tarek Fateh shared the viral video with a caption, "Pakistani Jihadis uprooting tree saplings to practice killing infidel kaafirs. Which begs the eternal question: How does one country produce so many rectums? Just how does Pakistan do it?"

At the time of writing this article, this post has been shared over 4500 times.

Major Surendra Poonia also shared the video saying, "Imran Khan copied PM Shri Modi’s ‘Tree Plantation Drive’ in Pakistan but his followers uprooted all trees because they feel “Planting trees is against Islam".

This post was shared over 8500 times.

The video is viral on Facebook with a similar claim.

In the viral video, one can see a group of men uprooting saplings and waving black flags while raising slogans.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be misleading. Investigation revealed that residents uprooted the saplings as they were protesting against the local administration for taking up the plantation drive on the land without seeking permission.

With the help of a reverse image search, we found a report published on a Pakistan-based news portal, Khabarnaamaa, carrying screenshots from the same video calling it an incident reported in Khyber's Bara Mandi area.

Another report on the incident published in Pakistan Today website mentions that the incident took place on August 9 after the residents of the area where the plantation drive was taken up started protesting as the land was a disputed site. According to the report, the residents were protesting against the local administration for taking up the plantation drive on the land without seeking permission.

As per a report published in Dawn, the local elders had claimed that the government had taken up the drive on their land in order to deprive them of it. A district administration official had told Dawn that 'there was a dispute between two powerful tribes over the ownership of the land'.

In conclusion, the video showing Muslims uprooting saplings in Pakistan is being shared with a false claim that men uprooted saplings as planting trees is against Islam.
