On August 13, Rajdeep Sardesai, a well-known journalist tweeted that former President Pranab Mukherjee, who is in a critical condition and is on a ventilator for the last three days, has expired.
He tweeted “Breaking: Former president Pranab Mukherjee has passed away. farewell, Pranab da. Many many fond memories of a dyed in the wool true Indira generation politician who lived and breathed politics. RIP,”

Soon after the fake news was tweeted, Pranab Mukherjee's son and daughter also clarified on his health and castigated those spreading rumors.
Former President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit stated that his father was hemodynamically stable now. "My Father Shri Pranab Mukherjee is still alive & hemodynamically stable! Speculations & fake news being circulated by reputed Journalists on social media clearly reflects that Media in India has become a factory of Fake News," tweeted Abhijit Mukherjee.
Sharmistha Mukherjee, the former president’s daughter tweeted that "rumors about his father is false and requested the media not to call her.".
Rajdeep Sardesai deleted the tweet within minutes after netizens called him out for peddling fake news. The journalist also apologized for falling for fake news being circulated on Pranab Mukherjee's death.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Army Research and Referral Hospital said Pranab Mukherjee's condition remained unchanged. The former president was admitted to the hospital on August 10 and was operated upon for removal of a clot in the brain.
“The condition of former President Pranab Mukherjee remains unchanged this morning. He is deeply comatose with stable vital parameters and continues to be on ventilatory support," a statement from the hospital said.
After testing positive for coronavirus, the former President had informed and tweeted: “On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self isolate and get tested for COVID-19.”
