Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan has not said that he will take ‘Jal Samadhi’ in Saryu river if not invited to ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ of Ayodhya Ram temple on August 5. The statement was given by a different Azam Khan who is the president of ‘Sri Ram Mandir Nirman Muslim Kar Sewak Manch’.
The Bhumi Pujan of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is scheduled to take place on August 5. PM Narendra Modi will also participate in the Bhoomi Pujan of the Ram temple.
A Hindi news portal News Track Live published an article along with an image of Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan claiming that the leader had said that he would 'take Jal samadhi' if he was not invited for the Bhumi Pujan of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on August 5, 2020.
The same article was tweeted by BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra saying" Azam Khan is saying that if he not invited to the ceremony in Ayodhya, he will take Jal Samadhi! Take water in your palm to drown yourself !! "
Several social media users shared the statement on Facebook and Twitter with the same narrative.
In our investigation, we found that the viral claim is false. The statement was given by a different Azam Khan who is the president of ‘Sri Ram Mandir Nirman Muslim Kar Sewak Manch’, not the Samajwadi Party leader Azim khan.
However, later Sambit Patra made it clear in another tweet that the agency had put a picture of wrong Azam Khan, but by then, the tweet was reshared over 1000 times.
Taking a hint from the caption, we researched on google and found a news report. The headline of the article reads "Azam Khan said - I am a devotee of Ram, If I am not invited for the Bhoomi Poojan then I will immerse myself in the Sarayu River.”. According to the news, the national president of Muslim Karsevak Manch, Azam Khan, reached Ayodhya and took a pledge that if he is not invited to the Prime Minister's Bhoomi Poojan program on August 5, he will take Jal samadhi in the Sarayu River on the same day.
We also found the video of Azam Khan's statement on the UP Tak YouTube channel. In the video, Azam Khan is saying that if he does not participate in this worship, then he should die. Azam Khan said that Lord Ram cannot be restricted to any religion or caste. Therefore, he also wants to become a witness to the Bhumi Pujan of Ram temple by joining this pious work.
On the other hand, Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan, along with his son Abdullah Azam and wife Tazeen Fatima has been lodged in a Rampur jail since 26 February. The family members have been sent to judicial custody for allegedly faking Abdullah’s birth certificate.
In conclusion, Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan has not said that he will take ‘Jal Samadhi’ in Saryu river if not invited to ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ of Ayodhya Ram temple on August 5. The statement was given by a different Azam Khan who is the president of ‘Sri Ram Mandir Nirman Muslim Kar Sewak Manch’. Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan is in jail for the last 4 months.
