Fact Check: An old video being falsely linked to the current situation in West Bengal

Summary

The viral video is at least a year-old video which is being shared with a communal message in the wake of violence in West Bengal. The video is not related to the current situation in West Bengal.

In the backdrop of recent violence in West Bengal, a video is with a communal message is going viral on social media. A Twitter user shared the video with a caption saying "Hindus are getting brutally thrashed in West Bengal. Central government should impose President's rule in the state, dismissing the Mamta Banerjee's government."

At the time of writing this article, this video received more than 2000 retweets. You can watch the video here:

The same video is getting viral on Facebook as well. A page named 'Hindu Army' shared the video with a caption, "In West Bengal, Hindus are being killed and tortured. This is happening when the Hindu Nationalist Party is at the center with an absolute majority, why Modi Ji remains a mute spectator? And how much trust you want to win of these jihadis."

This video has more than 2000 views and has been reshared more than 200 times. 

In this video, one can see a group of 10-15 men brutally beating two men.

The truth behind the claim 

In our investigation, we found out that the viral video is at least a year old video and is not related to the current situation in West Bengal. With the help of a reverse image search on Yandex by extracting the keyframes of the video on Invidtool, we found this video to be uploaded on a YouTube channel on March 25, 2019. 

The same video was shared by some Facebook users on April 25, 2020, suggesting that the video is from Bangladesh. The video was uploaded on a page named AL-Hera Vision with a caption that can be roughly translated to, "What has started in Bangladesh ??? Are they humans or animals?"

However, we couldn’t verify the location or context of the video. 

In conclusion, the viral video is a year-old video which is being shared with a communal message in the wake of violence in West Bengal. The video is not related to the current situation in West Bengal.
