PIB fact check clarified that a fake Twitter handle by the name of Gilgit-Baltistan, Ladakh UT is claiming to be an official account.
Recently, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the weather conditions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, areas that come under Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Pakistan was shocked by this move and in response, Radio Pakistan started telling the weather of Jammu and Kashmir.
Following this, an unverified Twitter handle claiming to be the official account of Gilgit-Baltistan, Ladakh UT became widely popular on social media. A Facebook user named Suresh Kochattil shared a screenshot that says "Twitter handle of office of the Union Territory of Ladakh renamed as Gilgit-Baltistan, Ladakh (UT), India. Great Move." This post has been reshared more than 140 times.
A Twitter user also made similar claim saying, "Initially, it was start with IMD's inclusion of PoK, Gilgit-Baltistan & now launching official twitter account
@GB_Ladakh_India.We welcome this move and ought to have done back long"
The viral handle has gained attention and the number of people following it has reached thousands. The viral handle joined twitter in May 2020 and tweeted for the first time on May 9th. The account only three posts till now with more than 35000 followers.
On May 13, the Press Information Bureau’s fact check arm tweeted that the handle is fake. “It is a #Fake handle. Union Territory of Ladakh has only 2 official Twitter handles ie @DIPR_Leh & @InformationDep4.”
The same was tweeted by the Department of Information & Public relations Leh Ladakh.
In conclusion, PIB fact check clarified that a fake Twitter handle by the name of Gilgit-Baltistan, Ladakh UT is claiming to be an official account.
