FACT CHECK: Truth behind the viral report claiming an Italian doctor couple died while treating Covid19 patients

  • Share

Summary

The viral image was captured at Barcelona airport in Spain and not Italy. The story of a doctor couple who died treating Covid-19 patients is also made-up as it could not be found in any credible Italian media either.

The coronavirus pandemic has killed thousands of people worldwide in less than four months with Italy being the worst hit among hundreds of other nations. As of March 24, Italy has seen more than 6500 deaths and 69,000 confirmed cases of Covid19. Amid all this, an image of a news report from a newspaper is doing rounds on social media that an Italien doctor couple died after saving lives of 134 Covid19 infected patients due to the coronavirus infection.

The report allegedly by a Hindi Daily, Jansandesh Times has a headline that can be roughly translated to, "Tragic: Corona took two lives after they saved 134 lives". The report suggests that a doctor couple got infected while treating corona patients and died on the 8th day, "When they felt they would not survive, they met and looked at each other with love in their eyes. After half an hour, they died." (Translated from Hindi)

A twitter user shared the image with a caption, "Tragic: Corona stopped breathing after saving 134 lives, Italian doctor couple engaged in the treatment of victims died of infection."

This image is also being shared on WhatsApp.

In the viral news report, we can also see a picture of the couple.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be fake as there is no credible source to prove its veracity.

As the 'Jansandesh Times' does not have any online news portal, we could not verify whether this story was covered by them or not. We further checked various news websites including Italian news websites regarding articles about a doctor couple who died treating coronavirus patients but did not find any such article.

After doing a reverse image search of the picture used in the viral news report, we found that this image was captured by a global news agency Associated Press photographer on March 12. The photographer, Emilio Morenatti also shared this picture on Twitter

The original caption of the image reads "A couple kiss at the Barcelona airport, Spain, Thursday, March 12, 2020. President Donald Trump announces strict rules on restricting travel from much of Europe to begin this weekend."

Hence, we can conclude that the viral image was captured at Barcelona airport in Spain and not Italy. The story of a doctor couple who died treating Covid-19 patients is also made-up as it could not be found in any credible Italian media either.
